Several challenges hinder the adoption of sustainable and bio-based materials in the construction sector where four areas are distinctive; fire, moisture, energy and acoustics. This project´s objective is to develop a flexible & prefabricated building system for exterior walls based on hemp lime, a bio-based building material with potential to be climate-positive, insulating, non-combustible, durable and offer unique acoustic properties.
Expected results and effects:
The project will develop a pre-fab wall system that utilizes all of hemp lime´s positive material properties, and at the same time solves technical and aesthetic product problems that currently hold back the adoption of the material. The project takes into account requirements in new construction on the single-family house market, but also high eligibility requirements in the public sector for new community buildings and apartment buildings.
A manufacturing process will be developed which will demonstrate the production of a commercial wall product and pave the way for scaling up Approach and implementation:
The project group is built on a triple-helix model and represents actors and competencies required to develop a commercial construction product from requirements to production. The project´s actors span from architecture, construction, municipal administration, academic research and industrial product development and production.
The project also includes actors and private individuals who have roles that during the course of the project will use materials, prototypes and project results in new construction.
