Purpose and goal:
Wireless connectivity is the backbone of digitalization. Current technology is sufficient in best-case scenarios, but not for mission-critical applications that require functional safety and resilience. The SweWIN center has been designed to proactively address these issues, with the vision that the quality of future wireless communication, positioning, and radar systems will be measured through three new metrics: sustainability, resilience, and fairness.
We will develop scientific and practical knowledge of these issues and thus shape the future of wireless technology. Expected results and effects:
The center will create new research collaborations in the Stockholm region where different constellations of researchers from academia and industry jointly identify and solve new problems. We will first conduct basic research on the sustainability, resilience, and fairness of wireless technology, to translate these keywords into measurable quantities.
Next, we will push technology development in these three directions. The new knowledge will be spread through teaching, publications, and conferences. New competence will be generated and researchers attracted to Sweden. Approach and implementation:
The research agenda is divided into six areas led by different researchers at KTH. The activities range from antennas and network architecture to algorithms and radio resource management using artificial intelligence (AI). The enterprises (ABB, Ericsson, Saab, Beammwave, Cellmax, Northern Waves) participate in these areas depending on interest and competence.
RISE contributes with its AI competence wherever needed. In addition to the research agenda, the center will renew teaching at KTH, and organize internal workshops and recurring public events, both physical and online.
