High-performance barrier coating for packaging’s with biobased substrates

The goal of the project is to verify the hypothesis that it is possible to coat a paper substrate with a thin impermeable layer. This was done by modifying a paper at Billerud and coating it at Chromogenics. The project thus showed that paper could be coated with a thin SiOx coating in a continuous process.

From the results of the tests carried out during the project, it appears that the SiOx coating provided an improvement in barrier properties, but the process and material need to be further optimized to achieve the full potential of SiOx coatings on paper. The project was conducted on a semi-pilot scale to verify the hypothesis, but all actors have the equipment and skills to be able to scale up the project results. Knowledge that each actor and the consortium as a whole created during the course of the project will thus be of great importance in the next step of development work.
