Purpose and goal:
Our long-term objective is to make the Internet of Things (IoT) more sustainable. In this project we will systematically explore the limitations and possibilities of organic batteries in IoT networks. Our team´s unique expertise in battery research and communication systems allows us to adapt IoT hardware and protocols to better suit the electrochemical dynamics of organic chemistry.
Expected results and effects:
We will examine different types of organic batteries and characterize their limitations and strengths in the IoT context. These results are taken into account when identifying and designing IoT hardware and protocols for future 6G networks, for example by adapting time and intensity of activities. We hope to influence 6G standardisation to design protocols that are compatible with organic batteries.
Approach and implementation:
The project is a collaboration between Uppsala Universitet (Information Technology and Chemistry) and Ericsson Research. The battery group provides prototypes of organic batteries with different chemical compositions. These batteries are exposed to IoT-relevant discharge and charge patterns in a large-scale testbed where we also can test different protocol variants and their impact on the battery´s health and lifetime.
