Purpose and goal:
Zinc-ion batteries are an affordable, safe, and sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries for use in stationary energy storage. This project eliminates scalability barriers and minimizes challenges in the industrialization of zinc-ion battery manufacturing. The goal is to gain knowledge and innovate in crucial zinc-ion battery production steps, such as slurry preparation and electrode formation. Hence, this project facilitates large-scale battery production for a new technology in Sweden.
Expected results and effects:
With 15-fold growth needed in stationary storage by 2030, Europe needs added production of battery technologies, such as zinc-ion batteries, that are globally competitive, socially sustainable and have resource-efficient and resilient supply chains. In this project, Enerpoly is ensuring industrialization success by setting up an industrial facility in Stockholm, advancing its know-how in zinc-ion production, innovating on critical manufacturing processes, and improving operational efficiencies.
Approach and implementation:
Enerpoly is correlating and optimizing the zinc-ion production process for battery performance, specifically in the electrode fabrication steps of slurry preparation, slot-die coating, drying, and calendaring. Quality control procedures will be refined and employed across these processes and in material sourcing and intake to improve yields. Health, safety, and environmental practices for employees will be implemented for the new industrial facility. A techno-economic analysis will be conducted.
