Purpose and goal:
The ProMultiFilms project aims to create sustainable, high-performance biobased barrier films for fiber-based packaging. It aims to address four challenges in the value chain to increase the TRL, MRL, and SRL: identifying and modifying biobased raw materials, integrating processes for producing biobased barrier films, laminating the films onto fiber-based packaging, and ensuring the recyclability and compostability of the packaging.
Expected results and effects:
The ProMultiFilms project is an excellent opportunity for the Swedish industry to be at the forefront of developing biobased barrier film and multilayer alternatives that can compete with plastics on both price and performance. By investing in research and development, the Swedish industry can help create solutions that are recyclable, compostable, and free of micro-plastics. This will not only benefit the environment but also position Sweden as a leader in the packaging industry.
Approach and implementation:
The project consists of seven work packages aimed at producing sustainable, biobased barrier films and multilayer flexibles for fiber-based packaging solutions. Work packages include coordination, identifying biobased materials, developing compounding strategies, enabling technologies, molding fiber-based substrates, laminating biobased films, and assessing circular design.
Each work package has specific tasks, such as characterizing the properties of the biobased films produced through extrusion and multilayer integration with spraying and barrier printing.
