Grant Description

Purpose and goal: In this preliminary study, the project participants have:

-Designed and fabricated a low-loss, compact all-fibre modulator based on specialty fibres that can be directly integrated in quantum fibre communication and sensor systems and functions at telecom wavelengths.

-Shown the proof-of-concept of a quantum memory and evaluation of improved performance of distributed fibre quantum sensing brought by this new device. -Evaluated the commercial prospects of this device and start planning for future R&D opportunities. Expected results and effects:

Results include an all optical-fibre low loss, phase modulator that can be seamlessly integrated in fibre-optic telecom and sensing systems and an optical memory adapted for quantum technologies. A patent application was submitted for this component.

Expected benefits include quantum technologies that work at room temperature and can be seamlessly integrated with existing optical communication links and networks and quantum sensing in the field of distributed fibre sensing where they will improve the sensitivity and extend the measurement range of these sensors to >100 kms.

Approach and implementation:

-A low-loss all-fiber phase modulator that can be directly integrated to a fiber-optic network was developed. This device was used to make an all fibre-optic memory prototype.

-Testing and evaluation of through experiments demonstrating the performance of the quantum memory prototype using single-photons carrying quantum information to evaluate the storage time, and fidelity of encoded state after retrieval.

- Protection of the all-fibred quantum memory concept through a provisional patent submission and contact-creating activities to build on future R&D opportunities.
