Grant Description

Purpose and goal: The aim is to develop a method for diagnostics of the fundus and eye muscles and their attachments with

one-photon quantum detectors for visible and IR light, to achieve imaging with greater depth. The method is based on one-photon quantum detectors with high time resolution, with which photons are the fastest moving through or reflected from within a biological sample. The goal is to build a platform for visualization of biological samples based on (1) a simpler type of laser than in previous investigations (2) an SNPD detector that will be leased, and (3) standard optical components.

Expected results and effects:

Deliverables are (1) a working setup at SPQR´s premises at Cancercentrum Karolinska (de minimi partner) (2) a documented re-engineering of the data pipeline for improved resolution and user interface, and (3) a visualization of the fundus and muscles that control the eye and their attachments to a depth of at least 4mm on porcine and bovine samples. SPQR has required permits from Jordbruksverket.

The objective is to detect small pieces of plastic and metal (maximum 3x3x0.2 mm) hidden in the organic sample with incident visible or IR light through the pupil and the vitreous. Approach and implementation:

Phase 1 (October-December 2023): installation in SPQR´s premises, setting up of a website and materials for outreach and dissemination, purchase of material and equipment according to project plan [full list and cost estimates in project plan, with due attention to inflation / cost rises in the intermediate time period], setting up leases for single photon detectors to be used during the project time

Phase 2 (January 2024): installation of single photon detector and tests Phase 3 (February-March 2024): project work as plan and above Phase 4 (April 2024): reserve time and reporting
