Since 1996, the Swedish Dyslexia Foundation and the Swedish Dyslexia Association have held a Nordic congress on dyslexia every three years.
The goal is to collect current research on dyslexia and, based on this, provide information and disseminate knowledge of the current state of affairs to educators and other professionals within the field.
So far, the congresses have gathered over 5,000 participants, mainly researchers, educators, school leaders, psychologists and speech therapists. On August 22 - 24, 2024, we intend to organize the tenth Nordic congress in collaboration with Gothenburg and Stockholm universities.
Prominent researchers in Europe, the US and Canada have already accepted to lecture at the congress. It is estimated that approximately 5% of all students have specific difficulties in reading and writing despite a good general talent and otherwise favorable external conditions (Ramus, 2005).
If these children are not effectively helped to overcome their difficulties, they will have lasting problems meeting the demands in their continued schooling and as citizens and professionals in a society that is largely based on written communication.
There are thus several reasons to draw attention to and promote research on dyslexia, dyslexia pedagogy and reading and writing development in general.
The gap between educational practice and the findings of research is still large, and an important purpose of the congress is to bridge this gap.Specific themes will be prevention/intervention research, learning to read in multilingual children, genetic and neurological aspects of dyslexia and comorbidity.Over the years, our congresses have become a natural meeting point for researchers, educators, school leaders, psychologists, speech therapists and others with a special interest in issues related to reading and writing difficulties/dyslexia.
The expected number of participants is approximately 500. The application covers travel, board and lodging for invited speakers.
