Grant Description

The contemporary form of globalization is characterized by an increased deepening of income inequalities, both between countries and within them, creating political instability in the Global South, which generates new waves of international migration, and presents a challenge to existing migration regimes in the Global North.

The problem is, however, that these political and economic relations and processes are understood and interpreted in a simplified way.

The political and economic instability of the countries of the Global South is most often interpreted as the sole consequence of their inability to create a stable political system, which would then lead to stable economic development, while economic and (geo)political interests/role of developed countries are often overlooked. This simplified perspective has led to two primary consequences in recipient countries.

Firstly, despite a trend towards more restrictive migration policies, many of these policies have proven ineffective.

Second consequence has been the amplification of the influence of populist political forces, advocating for even more stringent and xenophobic immigration policies.

This conference seeks to explore how these challenges manifest within the contexts of Canada and Sweden. The conference is structured into four sessions.

The first two sessions delve into more theoretical aspects, examining the underlying structural factors contributing to these processes (Session 1), as well as the capacity for migrants´ agency to act autonomously within these structural realities (Session 2).

Sessions 3 and 4 are dedicated to empirical case studies within the framework of Sweden and Canada in this context. Each session will commence with an inaugural keynote address delivered by eminent scholars in the respective fields, followed by presentations of five research papers during each session.

The conference´s culmination is envisaged to be a panel discussion featuring participation from all keynote speakers.
