Purpose and goal:
The goal of this preparatory project was to build a consortium which, under the leadership of Wageningen University, can deliver a competitive proposal to Horizon Europe with a broad Swedish participation. These goals have been fulfilled. The proposal has, except a well-balanced group of research actors, also a broad participation of societal actors, in particular of companies, which shows that the project has a high relevance and credibility.
Expected results and effects:
The main outcome of this preparatory project is a strong submitted EU-proposal with the acronym PLANET which is now under evaluation. If the project is approved and started later this year it will give major effects on the availability of environmental data for food in the EU and facilitate the transition to a more sustainable food system. This is true both for production data (fisheries, aqua- and agriculture), but also for later parts of the chain.
Approach and implementation:
The preparatory project started by an analysis of which the most important seafood products in European production and consumption are and which innovative alternative products or production technologies, or totally new products, exist. Six of these were selected and leading producers contacted and invited to participate by contributing with data for a Life Cycle Assessemnt (LCA) for their product, data that will become available for others.
