Research problem and specific questionsThis project aims to investigate the long-term outcomes and significance of "Extended home visits" (EHV), a program targeting first-time parents in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas.
EHV is a collaboration between social services and child healthcare and has been implemented in several municipalities in Sweden, based on preliminary evidence for positive short-term outcomes. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the program´s long-term outcomes.
The project will focus on the following questions:What are the long-term outcomes and significance of EHV on children´s health and development? What are the cost consequences of EHV with regard to the program´s key outcomes?Data and MethodThe study consists of four sub-studies that use a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods.
Data will be collected through structured interviews with approximately 260 parents of children aged 2.5 and 5-years, as well as through medical records from approximately 1200 children in an intervention and a control group. In addition, 20-25 personal parent interviews and six focus groups with staff will be conducted.
A cost-consequence study will be based on data from the quantitative sub-studies and cost data for EHV and the regular child healthcare program.Societal Relevance and UtilizationThis study is of great relevance given the societal challenges that health inequality and living conditions create.
By investigating the long-term outcomes of EHV, the study can contribute to developing knowledge about preventative and early interventions from Social Services.
The results could potentially lead to improved health and living conditions for families by influencing policy and practice.
The knowledge generated by this study has relevance at the local, national, and international level.Plan for project realizationThis study will be conducted over a four-year period and is based on multiple perspectives (children, parents, and staff). This will require extensive data collection to ensure accurate and reliable analyses, justifying the costs.
The project team possess expertise in psychology, social work, and health sciences, which provides a multidisciplinary approach to exploring and understanding the complex questions in the study.
The study is carried out in collaboration with several stakeholders, ensuring co-creation, guaranteeing its realization, and offering excellent opportunities for knowledge dissemination.
