Grant Description

Purpose and goal: The overall aim is the development of a device for real-time blood volume measurement, avoidance of contamination

and overall standardization of the sampling process to avoid user error. We have reached the stage of being able to produce a minimum viable product for further usability and lab-testing. Expected results and effects:

Blood volume is the most important variable for the detection of microorganisms in blood cultures (BCs). The odds of detecting a positive patient increase by 13% for each additional milliliter of

blood drawn for culture. However, in a recent study performed by our research team, we showed that sampling volumes are in general low. Only 18% of the BC bottles reaching the lab contained the recommended amount of 8-10 mL of blood and 47% were filled with less than 8 ml. Our device ´Volumeer´ has been proven effective in solving this issue.

Approach and implementation:

We are a multidisciplinary team comprised of medical professionals and industrial designers. By complementing these skills with expertise in industrial engineering and nursing, we are able to continuously test, improve, and validate our product development.
