Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The project aims to develop a carbon-neutral method using mill scale and chromite ore fines to produce FeCr alloy for special steel. A combination of agglomeration techniques, biochar, and pre-reduction with H2 will implemented to develop briquettes for SAF to reduce CO2 emissions. The objectives are to gain a comprehensive understanding, optimize processes, and develop knowledge that maximizes the metals recovery in the ferroalloy and special steel industries.

In the short term, the project aims to recycle >20% of mill scale and decrease CO2 emission by 16% from the FeCr industry. Expected results and effects: 1. Diversifying low-carbon FeCr sources reduces reliance on traditional ones, enhancing the supply chain. 2. Improving metal recovery enhances production efficiency, reduces waste, and increases overall yield.

3. Investigating biocarbon utilization and pre-reduction with H2 reduces carbon footprint, promoting sustainability. 4. Recycling mill scales and chromite fines saves costs on raw materials and waste disposal.

5. Successful implementation enhances FeCr industry competitiveness in Europe with a cost-effective and sustainable low-carbon production method. Approach and implementation:

The project will commence on 23-10-2023 and is expected to be completed on 22-10-2026. It consists of 8 work packages (WP): WP1: Mapping of iron carriers from the steel industry and alloy design. WP2: Production and handling of biocarbon. WP3: Design and optimization of technical-scale briquetting using Vibro press.

WP4: Pilot-scale briquetting using a roller press. WP5: Thermal treatment (H2 pre-reduction and smelting) of the briquettes. WP6: Industrial campaign at Vargön Alloys AB, Ovako, and Uddeholms. WP7: Techno-economic assessment. WP8: Project management and reporting.
