Purpose and goal:
The goal is to develop innovative bio-based barrier solutions that, together with a disruptive dry forming technology, will lead to a truly bio-based packaging concept. The project aims to facilitate a synergy between innovative ideas generated by startups and research groups, and established industry leaders in the functional chemistry sector. Three separate chemistry platforms will be developed including polyhydroxyalkanoate, sol-gel and wax-based coating to achieve barrier performance required in different market segments.
Expected results and effects: The expected outcomes from the project include:
* Novel high performance barrier solutions with the corresponding application system adapted for 3D fiber-based packaging.
* Bio-based prototype concepts within various product sectors for example take-away and fresh foods, dairy, personal care, and cosmetics sectors. * Developed standard methods for barrier evaluation on 3D fiber-based packaging. * Life cycle assessment and assessment of potential barriers for market entrance.
* Plan on scale up and commercialization of the developed barrier solutions. Approach and implementation: The project is divided into six work packages, which will mainly run in parallel and involve all project partners. WP1: Barrier chemistry development WP2: Barrier application technology WP3: Concept demonstration
WP4: Barrier and packaging performance WP5: Sustainability and project exploitation WP6: Project management and communication
