Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The aim of this project is to increase the understanding of the microstructural behavior of ’-strengthened Ni-based superalloys during electron beam-powder bed fusion (PBF-EB) manufacturing.

The goal is to track the microstructure evolution in real-time at conditions close to the full-scale PBF-EB process using high-energy X-rays and a customized PBF-EB sample environment. This will result in quantitative information about the time evolution of the precipitate phase fraction and information about how the temperature varies during processing.

Expected results and effects:

The project is expected to result in a deeper understanding of the material chemistry´s impact on the phase development in precipitation hardened Ni-base alloys during PBF-EB and of the influence of the PBF-EB process conditions on the materials´ state and quality.

The results are expected to have a positive effect on the industrialization of the PBF-EB technique for these alloys and, in turn, the realization of more advanced hot gas path designs and efficient turbines. Approach and implementation:

The project group consists of GKN Aerospace Sweden AB, KTH and University West. The project is structured in four activities. The 1st activity will be dedicated to the preparation and planning of the x-ray beamline experiments. This will include powder preparation, pre-printing trials at KTH and beamtime application.

In the 2nd activity, the experiments at PETRA III will be performed. The data from the beamtimes will be analyzed in activity 3. The 4th activity concerns dissemination of results and acquired knowledge through publications, conferences and to the AM community in Sweden.
