Eco-friendly stationary energy storage by organic flow batteries

Purpose and goal:

Rivus is a Swedish deep-tech startup which, through six years of university research, has developed organic electrolytes for flow batteries. The solution is of significance as it has the potential to reduce the cost and climate impact of stationary energy storage. The project’s purpose is to develop Rivus’ solution towards the market.

The goals are to validate its second-generation electrolyte system with a higher voltage and energy density in the lab and customer pilots, apply for international funding and strengthen intellectual property rights. Expected results and effects:

The project strives to meet the requirements expressed by potential customers and investors during 2022-2023. A higher energy density and voltage are achieved through rapid development of a new electrolyte system. A larger pilot battery system is then adapted and installed in a new application to demonstrate the new electrolyte system.

Simultaneously, customer dialogues, intellectual property rights and public funding is intensified. Altogether, this results in higher performance, lower technology risk and a shorter path to the market. Approach and implementation:

Rivus has a versatile team consisting of a CEO, chief operating officer, chief technology officer, lab technician, and five advisors, with broad expertise in chemistry, product development and business strategy that will implement the project through four phases: 1. Validate Rivus’ new electrolyte system and develop a strategy for public funding.

2. Preparation for pilot installation, including hardware procurement and risk analysis. 3. Production of electrolyte at chemical supplier, followed by commissioning of pilot system. 4. Market launch.
