Defined quality and requirements for circular aggregate materials

Purpose and goal:

The project´s aim is to reduce the environmental impact by increasing the use of circular aggregate products and reducing dependence on primary natural resources as raw materials. The project´s outcome is to produce proposals for a handbook that will provide consensus and support for the production of certified circular aggregate products. The handbook will be managed by the Sveriges Bergmaterialindustrier.

The project´s outcome goal is to further guide private and municipal clients in purchasing circular aggregate products through eligibility requirements in procurement. Expected results and effects:

The project will lead to more efficient utilization of excavated soils with reduced transportation, increased use of existing quarries as processing premises and reduced disposal of rock and soil. Expected effects is to reduce cost as well as climate emissions in building and construction projects managing excavated rock and soils. Studies have shown that the climate impact can be reduced by 2336% through a more circular handling of these materials. The project is also expected to contribute to a socially sustainable and equal industry.

Approach and implementation:

The project is carried out in three parts; 1. Development of an industry-wide methodology and handbook for circular mass management so that masses after upgrading and quality assurance can be used as traceable construction materials. 2. Knowledge base for public purchasers to open up to suppliers that have circular aggregate products 3.

Synthesis, collaboration and dissemination of results. A joint workshop with material sellers and material buyers is carried out and the results are also disseminated outside the project circle.
