Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

The goal of this project is to support the healthcare sector in India to sustainably utilize energy resources that are currently being wasted within the existing site as well as to investigate possible cooling of the nearby vegetable market. In addition, we will explore the new approach of using cooling derived from waste heat directly for some sterilization processes.

Expected results and effects:

Results: cost savings and GHG savings of (i) resorting to cooling as a complementary to the current, steam based, sterilization process in the waste management facility, (ii)recovering the waste heat instead of cooling its temperature down in the waste management facility, (iii) cooling adjacent industry buildings. Additionally, a potential analysis of this kind of solution if scaled up across India.

Impact: Use of an exploited asset, Improve of air quality. Improve of the comfort of who gets cooling, Positive impact on human health Approach and implementation:

A waste heat recovery system will be designed for a medical waste incineration plant in New Delhi to capture heat from flue gases. This heat will power absorption chillers that provide cooling for adjacent buildings and for an alternative sterilization applications (sterilization by cooling). A planned feasibility study to replace the current gas cooling unit at New Delhi´s Common Biomedical Waste Management Center with a tailored thermal storage solution will be made.
