Spectroscopic observations have recently become sensitive to the three-dimensional properties of the atmospheres of the hottest exoplanets.

Resolving 3D effects forms an enormous opportunity to learn more about the chemistry, structure, dynamics, evolution and formation history of exoplanets. However, understanding 3D complexity also poses great new challenges.

We propose to develop a 3D parameterized model with which we will jointly analyze spectra observed with both high-resolution ground-based spectrographs, and low-resolution but stable space-based spectrographs, with a focus on the recently commissioned James Webb Space Telescope.

This model will be developed as part of a fast, Bayesian retrieval framework that will allow us to robustly measure atmospheric properties in 3D, notably the chemical abundances of metals in the atmosphere. The framework will be developed open-source, allowing efficient and transparent dissemination in the community.

The framework will be developed jointly by the P.I. and a Ph.D. student over the course of 4-years.

The student will be embedded in the exoplanet group and Lund Observatory that already has a strong background in the analysis of spectroscopic observations of exoplanet atmospheres, making this an ideal environment.

After 4-years, our framework will allow us to make optimal use of the new JWST, and position us at the forefront of exoplanet atmosphere science when more advanced new instrumentation will become operational.
