AimAnxiety disorders are common and associated with reduced quality of life and work ability, pain, cardiovascular disease and premature death.
This novel project aims at comparing two strongly evidence-based interventions, while focusing on patient control and participation, in primary care patients with anxiety disorders.
The purpose is to tailor a lifestyle intervention reducing symptoms of anxiety, healthcare consumption, sick leave and preventing pain and hypertension.Data and methodTen primary care centres (PCC) in the VG-region will be randomized to offer individuals with anxiety disorders a choice between two interventions, a) the eHealth Lift, an evidence-based methodology for health promotion in primary care, and b) PHYSBI, a new individualized exercise program.
Ten matched PCCs will be randomized to offer care as usual.Outcome data will be obtained at baseline, 3 months and 1-year of follow-up and includes survey data, registry data, objective physical activity via accelerometry and health economic analyses.Relevance and utilizationIf a cost-effective intervention in primary care can successfully alleviate anxiety and contribute to improved physical health and maintained work ability, it can have a positive impact at both an individual level and from a societal and sustainability perspective.
Guidelines may need to be revised and the intervention included in primary care treatment practice.
