Disentangling discrimination in Europe: Patterns, processes, and consequences of discrimination experiences among multiple targeted groups in a comparative perspective

Discrimination is an incredibly complex problem in Europe, since in each country there are several groups which experience discrimination in several domains of social life.

Acknowledging this complexity, research on discrimination tends to focus on one group, or one domain, examining either causes or consequences, and avoiding the tangled web that represents social inequality on a diversifying continent. This project aims to disentangle the patterns, processes, and consequences of discrimination in Europe.

Taking a comparative approach, and including several datasets from the European Commission’s Fundamental Rights Agency which were specifically designed for researching groups that are often underrepresented in other surveys (immigrants, religious and ethnic minorities, and LGBTQI groups), this project will assess: 1) the patterns of discrimination in terms of the extent to which different targeted groups experience discrimination in different countries in several domains of life 2) the processes of discrimination to assess the contextual factors that predict varying levels of discrimination across targeted groups and 3) the consequences of discrimination by assessing the varying impacts that discrimination has on the lives of these targeted groups.

In doing so this project will push the research field forward to include these complexities and establish a multi-group, multi-domain, multi-outcome comparative perspective on discrimination.
