The study of amphiphiles such as lipids at interfaces is crucial to achieve understanding as to how they interact with other molecules and respond to external stimuli.
The fundamental studies proposed here will guide development of better switchable systems for release of pharmaceuticals, improve understanding of what can replace currently used chemicals that are considered toxic and other major societal goals.
In progressing towards these goals, we will make improvements to sample environments that will help neutron and X-ray instruments at ESS and DESY achieve their full potential.
Specifically, the project will work to improve the equipment for reproducible and reliable handling of samples, provide for enhanced analysis with scope for in-situ photoillumination and integrate these improvements in instrument control software.
The scientific objectives will include investigation of the photoswitching of phospholipids to observe how molecules rearrange, the identification of changes in structure and composition as lipids and surfactants interact with novel green solvents for future preparation of environmentally benign formulated products.
The resulting development of equipment and methodology will be of long-term benefit to many users of the facilities in diverse projects.
Scientific results will be relevant in areas such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, pharmaceutics, and improving the environment.
