Objective: We aim to establish a clinical trial network to enable active Swedish participation in an international randomised adaptive platform trial (SNAP) which evaluates a range of interventions to reduce 90-day mortality for patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SAB).Survey of the field: More than 600 episodes of SAB occur every year in Region Skåne or over 120 000 episodes in the USA with a 90-day mortality of 15-30%.
Despite this, less than 3000 patients have been randomised in any clinical SAB trial until 2021 and investigations from USA and Australia have shown that clinical management of SAB is highly variable. Methods: A little over 1100 participants have been recruited to the SNAP trial since Feb 2022. The European Medical Agency have recently approved SNAP and several EU countries are now planning to join.
We are a group of clinical researchers with experience from running trials who wants Sweden to take part in SNAP and the EU steering committee. We aim to begin recruitment of patients in 2024 and to develop new Sweden-led interventional domains.
We intend to apply for Swedish Ethical and Medical Agency approval in the next year and we will reach out to suitable hospitals based on our ongoing PACUTI trial and the ACTION Sweden trial network.
Relevance: This project would enable Swedish participation in the SNAP trial with potential to answer pivotal research questions and improve survival for patients with SAB using contemporary trial methodology.
