Purpose and goal:
The GE4FOW project is developing a new generation of direct-drive permanent magnet generators for floating offshore wind power. The generators are free of rare earth metals, which makes them more sustainable and cost-effective. They are also designed to be used in new innovative concepts with counter-rotating turbines.
Expected results and effects:
The GE4FOW project will develop a new generation of direct-drive permanent magnet generators for floating offshore wind power that are free of rare earth metals, more efficient and cost-effective than current generators. The new generators will be able to be placed in an air-filled underwater compartment, which will eliminate the need for a heavy nacelle on top of tower, contribute to stability and allow for more efficient use of marine space.
The project is expected to lead to a 20% reduction in the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) for floating offshore wind power. Approach and implementation:
The project will be executed in three main blocks: preliminary design, prototyping and testing. In the preliminary design phase will develop: a preliminary design of a 24MW generator and the control strategy for the electromagnetic side. In the prototyping and testing phase the different components of the generator and will manufactured, assembled and tested in a test bench at Uppsala University.
In the dissemination and validation phase, the consortium will prepare the final report and disseminate the results, and validate the generator in a real-world environment.
