Purpose and goal:
STMDROTOOLS project aims at reducing raw material and energy consumption in the metal working industry, through removing the unwanted vibration in machining. The project provides a new range of high-precision tools, integrated with RSTMD (Rotational-Self-Tuning-Mass-Damper) technology, that can boost productivity in CNC milling/boring operations.
Expected results and effects:
Machine tool vibration is the most prevalent source of productivity loss in machining, and the productivity loss costs 240 M €/day for the global metal working industry. As a rule of thumb, when the tool´s length-to-diameter ratio exceeds three, the risk of vibration rises rapidly. The current competing products using tuned-mass dampers are not flexible and lack the self-adjusting function.
The project provides robust vibration damped rotational tools to keep machining vibration under control. Approach and implementation:
The project consortium composes two partners: MAQ AB (lead org.) and Gaspari Utensili. MAQ AB takes the lead with its STMD technology and Gaspari will bring its expertise in CNC machining industry and build up the supply chain for R-STMD product series. The two partners will work closely with market study, product design, simulation, optimization, and experimental testing.
The project will last 2-years, and the goal for the consortium members is to launch the envisaged products at the end of the project.
