Purpose and goal:
The project ´This New Meat´ examines what a future could look like where cultured meat has wide acceptance and contributes to a sustainable and highly efficient food production - with a viable value chain from the farmer in the field to the protein brewery in the city.
The goal is to open up the debate around cultured meat in Sweden and create conditions for constructive dialogue with decision makers and actors within the food system. Cultured meat has great potential for the climate transition of the food system, but the debate is often non-constructive and polarized.
Expected results and effects:
The project will result in a "future home economics" prototype, collecting artefacts from a learning environment in 2040. These will bring to life, and give perspective on, the possible role of cultured meat in the Swedish food system, how it can be used and enjoyed, its benefits, advantages and disadvantages, and what a circular value chain could look like.
The expected effect is more constructive dialogue around the role of cultured meat - with the ambition to involve representatives from ministries, food companies, retail, agriculture, municipalities and consumer organisations. Approach and implementation:
The project is carried out in three phases. First, insights are gathered around the attitudes of various interest groups towards cultured meat as a possible food. With an increased understanding of the risks and opportunities that the interest groups experience, a future prototype is then developed. Finally, the prototype is launched at a couple of different exhibition occasions and stakeholders are invited to dialogue and reflection.
