Purpose and goal:
The purpose of the study is to make an overall survey of available methods for measuring the presence of microplastics and to understand for which methods there is potential for harmonization and standardization. The main focus will be on sample processing methods (for example, separation of microplastics particles from soil) as well as analysis of microplastics particles (for example, determination of polymer type and quantification of mass) from the largest known sources and the matrices in which they are expected to occur.
Expected results and effects: Specific results include, among other things:
A mapping (national and international) of existing methods that also takes into account differences, similarities and limitations in application areas. A mapping of where the greatest needs for method development and standardization exist. A plan for how a possible follow-up project could contribute to the harmonization of the methods.
Approach and implementation:
The project will be carried out through a broad literature study where the focus is on sample processing and analysis methods for road and tire wear particles, synthetic textile fibers, paint particles and microplastics particles from debris from different matrices (for example wastewater, sludge, soil, air, or water). The results of the evaluation will be compiled in a report and a table describing the performance and knowledge gaps of different analytical methods including processing steps for samples from different matrices.
