Purpose and goal:
SALSA project aims to address the call, HORIZON-CL5-2024-D2-02-02: Post Li-ion technologies and relevant manufacturing techniques for mobility applications, by developing a sustainable aluminum-sulfur battery for mobility application. The battery component does use any toxic or unsafe components such as Ni, Co, organic solvent, and hazardous polymer thus fulfills the expected EUCAR Hazard level below 4 for automotive; level 2 for aviation and waterborne applications.
Expected results and effects:
Rechargeable aluminum-sulfur (AlS) batteries are regarded as the potential choice for next-generation energy storage systems with the advantages of high theoretical energy density (1340 Whkg1), the earth abundance of the constituent electrode materials, and safe operation. The successful development of aluminum-sulfur batteries enables us to develop next-generation metal-sulfur batteries that do not exist today. This will not only accelerate use of batteries in EVs, but also in the aviation industry.
Approach and implementation:
The project will be coordinated by RISE. The consortium aims to develop and submit a competitive proposal on the topic of Aluminum-sulfur batter. The proposal comprises the following packages. WP1: Materials, electrode, and cell development and optimization at Lab scale WP2: Materials, Electrode, and Cell production at Pilot scale
WP3: Modelling and simulation in material, electrode, and cell level WP4: Sustainability and recycling WP5: Dissemination and exploitation and communication WP6: Project management and coordination.
