AI-based communication support for people with intellectual disabilities

Purpose and goal:

People with an intellectual disability have less prerequisites to assimilate digital information due to a reduced ability to understand spoken or written language. There is a need for more dynamic "smart" services. The project will result in a functioning AI prototype of a digital communication support adapted for and with the target group that makes available information from various authorities.

The project will also result in recommendations that describe the prerequisites for introducing this type of AI solutions within municipal activities. Expected results and effects:

An AI-based communication support that enables easily accessible, dynamic and individualized government and societal information for the target group, which provides increased independence for people with disabilities and a sense of control over their own lives. The project leads to a more efficient use of resources for municipalities by avoiding oversized efforts and also contributes with experiences and recommendations that describe the conditions for the introduction of this type of AI solutions in municipal operations. Today, there is no similar technical support.

Approach and implementation:

The project is carried out in collaboration between Skellefteå- Gothenburg- Jönköping municipality and RISE where the solution is developed in close collaboration with end users from all participating municipalities. The project begins with a current situation analysis and needs mapping. The focus will be on function, usability and benefit for the target group.

The project will use the strengths of generative AI by transforming text in several steps; text to image/pictogram or text to speech. Technical components are integrated into a shell application with a simple interface.
