Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

This project aims to optimize the production of shapeable, bio-based and degradable foams from cellulose-rich fibers or lignin by further developing and tailoring the properties and the process. The project aims to evaluate and use these bio-based foam materials for two different application areas: as migration solutions for safe guidance of fish past hydroelectric power plants to maintain biodiversity and as artificial floating islands to help strengthen and preserve the ecosystem in hydropower-regulated rivers.

Expected results and effects:

The project focuses on two valuable markets aimed at maintaining biological diversity and preserving ecosystems by utilizing a bio-based material. Customer needs have already been identified, technical specifications established, and a customer for pilot-scale technical validation secured. The project´s goal is to work towards optimizing the foam formulation, properties and processes to eventually launch a commercially viable product. This is also expected to lead to new patent applications.

Approach and implementation:

The project is divided into 4 work packages (WP) to advance the TRL, MRL, and SRL levels. WP1 aims to optimize the recipes for cellulose and lignin foams and improve the performance of floating rods and floating islands. WP2 focuses on designing an efficient scaling-up process.

WP3 involves long-term testing of materials by Vattenfall in relevant environments. WP4 includes a market analysis to validate the material´s potential in the intended applications. Prioritizing bio-based raw materials and sustainable methods will enhance the material´s lifecycle and sustainability.
