Grant Description

Purpose and goal:

Rivus develops energy storage in the form of organic molecules, salt and water for organic flow batteries. Currently, electrolytes for organic flow batteries can only be tested in lab scale cells or in expensive commercial flow battery systems. The project will provide rigs where electrolyte systems can be tested with commercial flow battery stacks to collect representative data for performance, material compatibility and long-term cycling, thus reducing the technology risk of new electrolyte systems before they are tested in full commercial systems.

Expected results and effects: The project is expected to enable systematic testing and data collection. This will strengthen performance claims, which is critical for the company´s current development phase as it reduces technology risk before risk capital and customer interest must be secured before the

planned market launch and industrial scale-up. The project results

will be implemented directly in the company´s activities and with its suppliers. The test rigs are expected to result in sales of the rigs to flow battery players, generating early revenue streams for Rivus Approach and implementation:

A component list for the test rigs is drawn up based on experience from previous builds of flow battery systems. Then the test rigs - which consist of tanks, pumps, hoses, a flow battery stack, some control electronics, sensors, and an inert gas system - will be built, pressure tested and filled with electrolytes. Then the systems will be continuously charged/discharged with a battery cycler and the system lifetime and energy efficiency performance of the organic electrolytes and the commercial flow battery stack will be collected.
