Purpose and goal:
This project aims to digitize the spotting process in tooling, crucial for achieving high fit precision between tool parts in manufacturing. Traditionally dependent on operator expertise, spotting ensures proper contact and fit between tool parts. By creating a database of spotting patterns and using AI to convert these into a digitized model of contact pressure distribution, the project will validate current Finite Element (FE) codes, reduce trimming times by 20%, and automate grinding and polishing processes.
Expected results and effects:
The project aims to validate a digital representation of contact pressure by digitizing spot images and validating numerical calculations. This will simplify spotting work, increase the precision of numerical forming simulations, and reduce trimming time by 20%. The project enables the automation of manual grinding and polishing processes, and enhance processing efficiency.
The outcome will lead to cost and lead-time reductions, improved social sustainability, and the elimination of exhausting manual processes in tool trimming. Approach and implementation:
RISE Research Institutes of Sweden will be accountable of project management, develop a customized tools, and generate training data to a database. Volvo Cars will contribute with expertise in trimming and spotting, specification of requirements, and validate the system in industrial environment. Gimic AB will develop the AI algorithm for visual inspection and explore commercialization.
Blekinge Institute of Technology will validate FE modeling of contacts. Mondragon University will assist the project in critical phases of technical development.
