This proposal is to support generation and dissemination of a Shigella Vaccines Value Proposition (SVVP), a critical portrait of the potential public health and economic value of vaccines against this major bacterial pathogen from the perspective of intended beneficiaries.
The SVVP will assist funding agencies and vaccine manufacturers in investment prioritization and facilitate policy recommendations and financing decisions, thereby catalyzing introduction of Shigella vaccines. This effort was endorsed by WHO’s Product Development Vaccine Advisory Committee.
The SVVP focuses on: 1) The strength of the evidence linking Shigella to stunting, and its economic consequences; 2) The projected health impact and cost-effectiveness of vaccine prevention; 3) The potential Shigella vaccine demand; 4) The pathogen composition of a Shigella-containing combination vaccine; and 5) The perceived value of Shigella vaccines in low- and middle-income countries.
These will be addressed through critical literature analyses, two expert convenings, health economic and macroeconomic analyses, and a multi-country feasibility and acceptability survey, each informing development of a comprehensive Shigella vaccine demand forecast. The SVVP itself will comprise a summary document, an extensive slide set, and multiple manuscripts.
This grant will complement initial funding provided by the Gates Foundation in expectation of Wellcome Trust support.
