Grant Description

From August 23-26, 2016, the Avian Influenza Surveillance, Preparedness, and Response: Wildlife, Backyard, Live Bird markets, and Commercial Poultry Workshop was held in Brazil.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is a disease that threatens food security, international trade, and potentially public health.

After the HPAI outbreaks in the U.S. in 2014 and 2015 several South American countries expressed their concern about the spread of the disease and the potential negative effects that a similar outbreak would have to the poultry industry in the region.

APHIS provided the workshop that taught participants about what its done regarding surveillance, preparedness and response from USDA SMEs as well as colleagues in the South American region.
