APHIS/Seoul gave a presentation on USDAs experience with irradiation as a phytosanitary treatment at an irradiation workshop organized by the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) in Daejon.
The meeting was set up as a prelude to a recently funded joint project between MIFAFF and KAERI to expand exports through treating Korean agricultural commodities with irradiation. Specific commodities to be exported are not yet identified.
KAERI has been a leading proponent in Korea of the use of the technology and seems to be gaining some support in the government. Currently, Korea prohibits the use of irradiation on all products, except for dry spices.
Other speakers at the event included a representative of the Minnesota Beef Council, a representative of the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine, and a representative of the International Irradiation Association
