The Brazilian National Plant Protection Organization (MAPA-DSV) proposed the organization of a SEMINAR to discuss the use of irradiation as a quarantine treatment to facilitate the trade of fresh fruits with United States.
Brazil produces and exports tropical fruits to different markets in the Americas, Europe and Asia, but faces a significant limitation on their exports to United States due to phytosanitary restriction that could be addressed with the use of irradiation as a quarantine treatment.
MAPA-DSV has regulated the use of irradiation in Brazil, but producers and exporters still present resistance to use this technology, mostly due to misconception about its risk and acceptance by the U.S. consumers.
An APHIS official provided a presentation on the U.S. regulatory framework to allow the use of irradiation as a quarantine treatment in United States.
