APHIS participated in a workshop related to European grapevine moth (EGVM) eradication in Argentina to provide the Agency's experience with eradicating this pest in California. EGVM is a moth that feeds on several species, and represents a significant agricultural pest around the world. Among the most known hosts, grapes and blueberry are affected.
The EGVM was first detected in California in September 2009, and fully eradicated in August 2016.
In November 2017, Argentina NPPO reported the first detection of EGVM in Entre Rios, a province located north of Buenos Aires Province, and in the heart of the highbush blueberry production region. The United States is the main destination county for Argentina's blueberry fresh fruit.
Most of the shipments to the United States are fumigated with Methyl Bromide (MB) via a pre-clearance program with APHIS.
However, there is a significant portion of blueberry fruit that is exported to the United States with Cold Treatment (CT). While MB fumigation is considered to mitigate for EGVM, CT is not, therefore there is a great concern on both Argent
