The meeting was held at the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Bamako, Mali.
There were 96 participants from 23 countries as well as FAO-ECTAD Tunis, Nairobi, and Bamako, USDA-APHIS-IS, USAID, and Texas A&M University.
The meeting was an opportunity to present the epidemiological situation of major animal diseases in the region compared to information from OIE (Wahid) and FAO (Empres-i). Major diseases discussed were PPR, FMD, Newcastle Disease, African Swine Fever, and Rabies. Participants proposed the institutionalization and anchoring of RESOLAB to a regional institution.
APHIS and FAO-ECTAD planned to implement joint capacity building programs in January 2012, Calibration in Dakar, Kinshasa and Nigeria and Calibration & Basic Metrology in Banjul, The Gambia.
DRC, Ivory Coast, Niger, Senegal, Nigeria and Mali agreed to participate in validation studies on real-time PCR assays for Lumpy Skin Disease and Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia proposed by USDA/APHIS, Proficiency and Validation Services Section, Plum Island
