A total of 36 participants from 23 affected or at-risk countries participated in the training and learned how to use molecular techniques such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and genetic sequencing to detect the virus within three hours and help trace its origin and spread.
An emergency diagnostic toolbox with necessary reagents and consumables was provided to the participants to better equip their laboratories to detect and manage the disease.
The training was critical to develop technical skills in laboratories in the region, as the disease continues to spread despite current control measures such as culling and movement restrictions of cattle.
