Grant Description

Activity 1: The Taiwan Animal Health Research Institute (AHRI), the equivalent to NVSL, Council of Agriculture, sent two researchers to learn techniques and skills of detection of zoonoses in wildlife animals to build capacity in surveillance and diagnosis of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in wildlife animals in Taiwan.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) were used as topics to learn diagnostic and surveillance techniques.

The researchers spent two weeks in training, one week for CWD related techniques, and one week for BSE techniques and methods; Activity 2: Taiwans Council of Agriculture, Animal Health Research Institute (AHRI), held an international conference on transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) in November 2011.

AHRI invited a speaker from APHIS to give a lecture on surveillance and diagnosis of chronic wasting disease (CWD) and BSE.

All expenses including international air fare and per diem were paid by AHRI, allowing APHIS to share experience and exchange knowledge on surveillance and diagnosis of TSE. AHRIs
