A Packing House and Post Harvest Inspection Training Workshop was conducted in Santa Cruz del Quiche, Guatemala from December 10-13th.
Many crops are lost post harvest due to failure to meet SPS trade standards, either at U.S. ports of entry or regionally. This training focused on high altitude crops that are grown in the western highlands. Much of the workshop was coordinated UC Davis' Marita Cantwell, who is an expert in post-harvest losses.
Luis Caniz from APHIS/Guatemala discussed many of the reasons produce is rejected and methods of preventing future rejections.
Objective of Program/Visit: The purpose of this training is to decrease post-harvest crop losses for producers, both regionally and at U.S. ports of entry, by improving SPS inspection standards of packing houses and producers
