This activity will support rural, smallholder pig producers in Hispaniola.
The goal is to address and curb the ongoing African swine fever (ASF) outbreak threatening food security since August 2021 while increasing the coordination capacities and readiness of the region to the disease through four main activities: 1) Enhance capacity for management of the current ASF outbreak in Haiti (control and surveillance) for rural small pig producers, as well as targeted swine husbandry and biosecurity enhancement where practical; 2) Develop, promote and implement an ASF awareness and risk communication strategy for the informal swine sector, integrating the perceptions and needs of this sector in Haiti and the Dominican Republic; 3) Mitigate the impact of ASF outbreaks on affected small-scale swine producers across Hispaniola through tailored emergency livelihood assistance and livelihood recovery activities; 4) Regional coordination and preparedness to prevent the spread of ASF to other countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.
