Grant Description

This is a model deminstration program on Artisanal Gold Mining is to reduce mercury emissions using improved, clearner technology and training.

The goals of this project are to: reduce air emissions, mercury consumption and mercury exposures to miners, gold processing shop owners and both rural and urban inhabitants from artisanal gold mining and refining. This model can be tranfserred and replicated in other countries.

In FY09 this project focuses on (1) completing one year of technical assistance to Peru for their replication of the mercury capture system in gold shos in Peru and (2) transferring the model pilot experience from South America to West Africa; (3) developing a public-private sector partnership model piolot for 'sustainable mined' gold and (4) developing an elemental mercury metrics' effects levels outreach document using ASGM as a model example of exposure.
