Grant ID 2562061
Grant Description

This project aims to significantly reduce the cost associated with machining by developing a non-destructive experimental method based on X-ray diffraction through which the deformation on a component can be measured hence providing a data-driven approach to machining and limiting unnecessary tool replacements whilst also providing a measure of deformation due to machining.

The project will seek to develop the methodology so that it can be integrated on machining rigs, facilitating real-time deformation quantification.

In addition, the methodology will establish the machining deformation maps for a superalloy used in the aerospace industry, enabling improved performance to be achieved as well as alloy-specific machining processes to be determined.
