This project will reevaluate the history and development of anti-colonial internationalism in interwar Britain through a study of the League Against Imperialism (1927-1937), particularly its British Section (BS-LAI) and its anti-colonial affiliated groups - the India League, the Negro Welfare Association, the Friends of the Chinese People, and the
China Campaign Committee.
It will explore the extent to which the BS-LAI served as an infrastructure through which Black and Asian anti-colonial activists and groups based in Britain were able to: - Come together as part of a common, cross-border anti-imperialist network and movement. - Present radical anti-imperialist political perspectives informed by direct experiences of colonialism.
- Build a popular case for decolonisation within the wider British Left and labour movement, attempting to reconstruct and understand the reception of the BS-LAI and their affiliates' ideological and political challenge to the Empire.
