My research explores the social existence of sexually connotative images and visual culture as a foundation for a more nuanced understanding of sexuality in Russia between 1880 and 1918.
Through the analysis of hitherto unexplored visual materials, the project challenges the prevalent text-focused approaches to sexuality in Russian culture.
This study employs an interdisciplinary framework, combining visual, gender, and decolonial studies with critical theory and cultural history, to elucidate the complex interplay between visuality and sexuality in late imperial period.
Additionally, it provides a cognitive background to our understanding of the recent conservative shift in the Russian politics toward sexuality.
