Context And Rationale Singing voice pedagogy has its roots in the master-apprentice model of instruction (O'Brien and Harrison, 2014; Manternach, 2024). The lineage of imagery (which in this study refers to metaphor) as a teaching tool can be traced within this hierarchical model of knowledge transmission, with pivotal 'master' pedagogues contributing to the development of an
imagery taxonomy for vocal instruction (for example, Reid, 1983). This rich cultural tradition has resulted in the proliferation of 'stock' images (Garnett, 2009; Black, 2015), which are applied by practitioners in solo and ensemble vocal instruction.
