This project documents a forgotten history of theatre-making centred on the search for a universal language of theatre able to overcome linguistic and national barriers, and bring hope and cross-cultural understanding.
This is the first analysis of the work of two innovative theatre-makers and Europhile internationalists, David Gothard and Giovanni Pampiglione.
The project uncovers the related histories, during periods of heightened conflict and tension, of Gothard's productions of Hamlet in Albanian in Kosovo and South Africa and of Pampiglione's work with Atelier di Formia, performing modern Polish theatre in Italian in Italy and in Poland.
