Grant Description

Challenging the previously parochial and individualistic examinations of sport and masculinity in British and American national cinemas, this project will employ a uniquely cross-cultural and collaborative approach to how race, gender, and social class are perpetuated through the politics of the sporting body. Drawing on the cultural

climates of the conservatism of American masculinity in the 1980s and the liberalisation of working-class masculinity in the 1960s British New Wave, I will utilise an intersectional critical scope to illuminate the performative and nostalgic function of the male sporting body.
